Bold NYC Art Shows & Performances to Color Your Holiday Season

Light Up the Season at Striking NYC Art Shows & Performances

Amid the Manhattan holiday shopping and sightseeing hustle and bustle, there's nothing quite like taking advantage of the creative capital of the world. Here are a few of the best art shows in NYC to inspire your season with more than Christmas décor:

Ai Weiwei: Roots & Branches

Chinese activist and artist Ai Weiwei fills four Manhattan galleries with profound sculptures and installations (Deitch Projects, 18 Wooster St; Mary Boone Galleries, 541 W. 24th St & 745 Fifth Ave; Lisson Gallery, 504 W. 24th St). Pieces include a 25ft reconstruction of dead trees from China, clothing from Syrian refugee camps, 40,000 broken teapots, and a puzzle box.

Mark Rothko, "Dark Palette"

Pace Gallery

510 W. 25th Street

Renowned by The New York Times, this show offers a rare focus on Rothko's turn toward darker colors, inspiring viewers to meditate on the radiance of darkness.

Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest

New Museum

235 Bowery

Through January 8th

For the first time ever, NYC gets a proper survey of the work of immersive Swiss video artist, Pipilotti Rist. Her pieces are 360-degree installations with an iridescent rainbow of swirling psychedelic projections and hypnotic soundtracks.

New World Stages

340 W. 50th Street

Through January 8th

Performers breakdancing in the dark to the likes of Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars, outfitted in suits lined with neon light strips, you may have seen this colorful troupe on America's Got Talent, MTV's Video Music Awards, and Dancing with the Stars.

Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905-2016

Whitney Museum of American Art

99 Gansevoort Street

Through February 5th

Over a century of experimental cinema is presented across a swath of exhibits ranging from installations to projections, performances, 3-D spaces, and hands-on experiences.
